Fuses

An electrical fuse is a safety device designed to protect electrical circuits and devices from overcurrents or short circuits. It consists of a thin wire or strip of a material that has a lower melting point than the surrounding circuit components. The fuse is installed in series with the circuit it is intended to protect.

How a Fuse Works:

1. Normal Operation:
– Under normal operating conditions, the current flows through the circuit without any issues, and the fuse remains intact.

2. Overcurrent or Short Circuit:
– If there is an excessive current due to a short circuit or overloading, the current passing through the fuse increases.

3. Heating of the Fuse Element:
– The increased current causes the fuse element (usually a wire) to heat up due to its electrical resistance.
– The fuse element is designed to have a specific rating, and the heating effect is proportional to the square of the current.

4. Melting of the Fuse Element:
– When the current exceeds the designed limit and the heating becomes too intense, the fuse element melts or “blows.”
– The melting of the fuse element creates an open circuit, interrupting the flow of current through the protected circuit.

5. Circuit Protection:
– By breaking the circuit in the event of overcurrent, the fuse prevents damage to connected devices and wiring.
– Fuses act as sacrificial elements, sacrificing themselves to protect the more valuable components in the circuit.
